e-Arabic Learning at CASAW

In September 2007, CASAW launched its e-learning agenda to facilitate its aim of modernising the teaching of Arabic in the UK.
Supported by the University’s excellent e-learning infrastructure and robust university-wide virtual learning environment, CASAW adopted an innovative approach to delivering its intensive Arabic programme using technology-enhanced learning strategies. CASAW students are given access to a unique “blended” teaching programme - comprising of intensive face-to-face tuition along with an imaginative and user-friendly e-learning programme throughout their studies, This initiative created a new teaching post (e-learning lecturer in Arabic) - one of the first of its kind in Higher Education in the UK. The e-learning lecturer plays an active role in leading, designing and delivering online materials (e-tivities, e-tests, e-resources, etc…) to support language learning inside (during e-seminars) and outside the classroom (via a virtual learning environment). Students are also given access to a growing database of multi-media resources and other e-learning tools and technologies that maximises and re-inforces their ability to master Arabic at an advanced level. In order to revolutionise the face-face teaching of Arabic, CASAW recently secured funding to upgrade its teaching room into an “e-seminar room” equipped with the latest e-learning technologies. Students will be able to engage and learn collaboratively via an interactive SMART-board with wireless internet connection - making the learning of Arabic more stimulating and enjoyable. Using these tools creatively, the e-learning instructor and students will have instant access to up-to-the-minute information and a wealth of hyper-media learning resources.
