Discussion and Book Launch: Al-Tayyib Salih with Prof. Ami Elad-Bouskila

On the occasion of the publication by the Journal of Semitic Studies of Professor Elad-Bouskila’s major study, Voices of Exiles: A Study of al-Tayyib Salih and His Work, Professor Elad-Bouskila discussed with al-Tayyib Salih his life and works.
A renowned Sudanese author al-Tayyib Salih
is one of the most accomplished writers of modern Arabic literature. He has dealt primarily with a crucial theme, the clash between Eastern and Western culture. The question of individual and collective identity during a time of change is a major issue in his work. Salih’s uniqueness is in the poetic style of his writing, in which he combines elements of classical Arabic literature with features of modern Western literature.
Prof. Elad-Bouskila
teaches Arabic language and literature at Beit Berl College in Israel. His publications include The Village Novel in Modern Egyptian Literature, and Writer, Culture, Text: Studies in Modern Arabic Literature.
