France and the Arab World
International Workshop
15 -16 September 2009*
Venue: Institut Français, Edinburgh
This interdisciplinary workshop is to be held in Edinburgh, under the auspices of the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW), University of Edinburgh, and with the cooperation of the Institut Français d’Ecosse.
The workshop will provide an in-depth investigation of France’s engagement with the Arab world, from the pre-colonial period to the present day. Approaching this multi-faceted subject from multiple disciplinary perspectives, it will overcome artificial barriers to comparative study and set new agendas for comparative research.
The workshop will bring together a group of 12 invited speakers with relevant expertise (including young scholars as well as more established researchers) for a series of round table discussions. Participants, from France and the Arab world, as well as Anglophone countries, will prepare a paper for circulation prior to the workshop. At the event, each paper will be introduced by a discussant; the author will then respond to the discussant, and their exchange will form the basis of a round table discussion.
*Please note this event is not open to the public. However the immediate output of the workshop will be made available online.
