An evening on Arabic literature took place on 5th March 2008 at the Manchester Central Library. Our guest speaker was the celebrated Lebanese writer Hanan Al-Shaykh, who read one of her short stories in both Arabic and English. Professor Hoda Elsadda introduced the author and her major works. Then, in conversation with Dr. Dalia Mostafa (CASAW Fellow at the University of Manchester), and Dr. Anastasia Valassoupoulos (Lecturer in Postcolonial Studies at the University of Manchester), Al-Shaykh spoke about her work in terms of both form and content. The interview touched upon some interesting subjects, such as Al-Shaykh’s role as a storyteller, audience reception to her novels and short stories, the places and cities she has written about, various political questions as well the politics of gender embedded in her work, and her latest work. After the interview, the floor was opened for questions and answers. The event was indeed well-attended and well-received, and was an excellent joint activity between CASAW and the Manchester Central Library.
