“Hidden Histories” Palestine and the Eastern Mediterranean
Published in July 2010 by Pluto Press, “Hidden Histories” by Basem Ra’ad is an important book that tackles the hidden history of colonial interference in Palestine; reconnects this history to the contemporary people of the region and through exploration of historical methods, constructs a valuable and original historical and cultural narrative.
Basem L. Ra’ad uncovers this hidden history and begins the process of reconnecting it to contemporary peoples. Ra’ad’s findings are an important step towards reconstructing an alternative history, one which dispels many of the myths relating to religions, languages, peoples and sites. At a time when there is a massive push for change across the Middle East from Tunisia to Egypt and beyond, this is a very timely opportunity to hear Basem speak on his book and the implications for politics and identity in Palestine today.
Basem L Ra’ad is a visiting Professor of English and Humanities at the American University in Beirut. He is also a Professor at Al Quds in Jerusalem and the Managing Co-Director of the Palestine-Israel Journal.
