Public Reading Group for Middle Eastern Fiction in English
To mark the National Year of Reading, Manchester Libraries and the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW) invite you to a new Reading Group for Middle Eastern fiction in English. We will be reading Middle Eastern novels translated to, or written in, English by Middle Eastern authors.
Venue: Manchester Central Library, Reception Room, 2nd Floor, 6-7 pm
CASAW is pleased to contribute 55 copies of different novels to Manchester Central Library’s collection of Middle Eastern fiction. The books will be used in an ongoing reading group that will take place once a month. The following novels will be read this year:

2. Dear Mr. Kawabata by Rachid al Daif (Lebanon) Dec. 9th 2008
3. Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al-Aswany (Egypt)
4. The Translator by Leila Aboulela (Sudan)
5. Snow by Orhan Pamuk (Turkey)
6. The September of Shiraz by Dalia Sofer (Iran)
7. Girls From Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea (Saudi Arabia)
8. Wild Thorns by Sahar Khalifeh (Palestine) Feb 10th 2009
9. Just Like Tomorrow by Faiza Guene (Algeria) March 10th 2009
10. Mothballs by Alia Mamduh (Iraq) April 14th 2009
The books will be displayed in the main exhibition area of the Library and will be circulated around other public libraries in Greater Manchester in order to encourage public access to literature on the Middle East. For further information, please contact Michelle Obeid.
