The Early Islamic World

Leader: Dr Andrew Marsham, University of Edinburgh

The network will investigate current research developments on the origins of both Arab ethnic identity and the religion of Islam, c.500-c. 750 CE. There is a shared sense that the more specialist scholarship that sheds light on diverse aspects of the formation of the Arab world in 6th through 8th centuries CE (economic, political, social, religious, cultural) should be brought together to draw out previously unexplored connections with an increasingly specialist academy and also in order to present this new, larger, synthesised picture to a wider public.
